About Us

History

Sikika is a Tanzanian non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 1999 and registered in 2000 as Youth Action Volunteers (YAV).

The primary goal of the organisation then was to empower youths as a vehicle to ensuring a healthy and responsible nation. The organisation re-branded in 2009, not only changing its name to Sikika but also shifting its focus to include all citizens. Since then, the organisation has been striving to make sure that citizens are empowered to participate in the national development process – in order to realize Tanzania’s development vision for 2025.

Over the past five years, the key areas of focus for Sikika include citizens’ positive behaviour change around health issues and the policy and budgetary environment around health and HIV/AIDS issues.
Sikika’s experience is now being put to good use under the scope of its Strategic Plan (2011– 2015), where advocacy and citizens' active participation in policy formulation and review, and budgeting within the health and HIV/AIDS sectors, play a more prominent role.

Where we work

Sikika currently works in the Dar es Salaam districts of Kindondoni, Temeke,Ilala and Coast region in Kibaha district. According to the 2002 Tanzania Population and Housing Census, the population size in Dar es Salaam is 2,497,940 and in Kibaha it is 132,045.

How we work

Sikika, in addition to its permanent office staff, also engages volunteers, who are central in carrying out activities on the ground and reaching various communities. Currently, Sikika is working with 70 volunteers from Dar es Salaam region and Kibaha district.  The organisation also works in partnership with other organisations (NGOs) and networks to achieve its goals. Through these partnerships Sikika is able to effectively carry out much of its policy and advocacy work.
